Coral reefs are at harm due to the dangerous chemicals put in sunscreen, causing coral bleaching.

When coral is bleached, the coral is under significant stress and is subjected to increased mortality rates.

Oxybenzone and Octinoxate

Two of the most popular chemicals in sunscreens which dominate most shelves in stores. These two chemicals convert UV Rays, which cause sunburns, into harmless heat on our skin. Once these chemicals get in the water, the coral’s defence against bleaching is diseased, hurting their development and DNA. This damage plays along with other damages such as ocean pollution, ocean acidification, rising sea levels and temperatures, and coral disease, preventing coral from successfully reproducing and surviving. Research conducted has shown that over 6,000 tons of sunscreen each year have been exposed to the ocean in Hawaii.
