An estimated 14,000 tons of sunscreen end up in oceans each year.

Toxic Sunscreen?

The main chemicals in sunscreen, oxybenzone and octinoxate, are chemicals leading to coral bleaching. Coral bleaching also causes damages to its DNA, and abnormal growth with deformities. Corals are then more susceptible to diseases, such as the Stony Coral Tissue loss in the Caribbean.

Reefs and the animals

Coral reefs provide shelter and protection to thousands of marine animals. As the reef collapses, many at-risk species may face extinction.

Reefs and the people

The reefs protect people’s lives, food, and safety. Coral acts as a natural barrier that absorbs waves and storms, protecting costal communities.
